Put a little giggle in it!

Yesterday's blog was canceled due to some yumminess and symptoms. I made chocolate dipped big stick pretzels, with sprinkles! Who would have thought all this fun was so exhausting?! I started them last night while my family was still out, coming back from my cousin Collin's game, and then my aunt and I wrapped them all and tied little ribbons and it was fun. Today is the "fun fair" at Christian's school, and the pretzels will be sold to raise money, I love that. When I was in middle school and high school, I used to love to participate in that. I'm sure it drove my mother crazy, as I was always adding something to her baking list, but it always turned out fun, and we'd raise what we needed to raise, especially for important things like cheerleading uniforms... etc. =)

I had my first night of nausea last night! Ewwwwwwwwwwww, but I rallied and got a GREAT night of sleep and am back at work today! TAH DAH! Sleep is my hat-trick! Pour a little sleep on it, and BAM! The magic happens! Beauty rest is REAL! Keep this in mind folks! I know I'm going to be gangsta with my college students about sleep now, mandatory bedtime! I've been doing my own rendition of MC Hammer's "Hammer Time" to "Shower Time" to get Christian to take a shower, including a dance and rubbing my bum on him since he "stinks." (FYI: No children are harmed in this performance, it is solely for when attitude is given to my beautiful Aunt who takes on enough, and does not need brattiness added to the load!)  I am considering modifying this act to "Sleep Time" just because I know there are plenty more dance moves I can come up with for this. =) It'll be perfect. I foresee a YouTube video in the future.

I wrote last time about my naughty platelets and how they were a little lower than anticipated, they also bounced right back up!!!! I went from 280 post-surgery, to 190 in last week's bloodwork, to 257 in my bloodwork yesterday. I swear, it's me being at WORK, it's WORKING! MWAHAHAHAH! (this was my mad scientist moment) Making me happy and healthy! My immune number is a little low (of course, we're kind of attacking that right now) but no problem, still in the safe range on everything, and today is day 19 of chemo! Woop!

As you might be seeing from the above paragraphs, I'm slightly hyper, or possibly a little batty at the moment. I blame the nap and coffee! =)

So, for those who know me, I'm very SERIOUS. A lot of the success I've seen in my short life has to do with the fact that I REFUSE to let my eyes drift from the prize, even for a second. Not only do I plan way in advance, but I have always considered everything I do in every day to be steps I'm taking to those goals, and so I am constantly in the pressure cooker. This has been my own doing, and it has brought both positives and negatives to my life. Part of what attracted me to Jason is that with him, I could be silly. He has always been able to stoke a laugh out of me, even when I was obsessing about the font on my last report, or how the margins didn't line up perfect: my normal "perfectionist", "detailed" (I make dotting Is and crossing Ts exhausted), "must be the best at everything" routine! What cancer has given me is a sense of lightness! Even when my "must not be late, EVER, or it means immediate death" tendency kicks in (doctors appointments), I am able to laugh within seconds. I feel lighter, like I'm laughing more, like I don't have to finalize the plans immediately, like more things are just plan FUNNY. This feels so good!

In the face of some of the most terrifying things I've experienced, my humor hasn't even considered abandoning me, it has instead jumped in head-first to save me from myself! One less thing to worry about!

Speaking of FUNNY... this is what I read yesterday while waiting on my bloodwork:

Waka... Waka..... Waka......

Which also brings me to one more funny thing:

This is at the University of Michigan, in the undergraduate library (UGLI), and at the Fishbowl. Moments like these prove why I bleed blue and gold!

  1. I am sure that you have already been given an earful of suggestions but I'll give you my recommendations just in case. Try Hard Ginger Candies, dried ginger or ginger tea. They worked for me. Nate's Aunt has chemo treatments and she recommended it to me. I was also told lemon scented and/or flavored stuff helps. Like a lemon candle.

    Love you,

Butterfly Day

( The title of the last blog post indicated that I needed a simple name for this day. I can't remember if someone suggested it outright, or whether they said something to make me think of it, but either way, the name I now use is Butterfly Day. Torin painted on a picture of a butterfly at school on the very day his mother passed, and his teachers had just so happened to put his name and date on it.) Another year has passed, and it simultaneously seems like a short time and a long time. I do still write letters to Danielle, but just haven't been posting them here. The one I just wrote took a lot out of me, in fact, so this probably won't be a long update. When I took over the blog, one of the things that felt important in continuing this legacy was to document not only the grief process, but the process of healing.  Overall, on a day-by-day basis, I'd say I have come to terms with my loss. By that, I mean that, except for days like today, and on a few rare other occasion...

Letter In A Bottle

Today, on what would be her 38th birthday, I wrote a letter to Danielle. It's the first such letter I've written, and it was cathartic. I wasn't sure whether I would just paste it here, or just paste parts of it here, or write something else entirely, but I've decided to share it in its unabridged entirety. It re-treads some ground that I've already covered in this blog, but this was written to Danielle; those were not. Most typos are inside jokes or turns of phrase. Happy birthday, Danielle. I love you. First, foremost, and always. My love for you is unconditional, unquestionable, and unquantifiable. I miss you. Lort, how I miss you. I miss your smile, your wit, your kindness, your grace, your strength, your care, your laugh, your sillies . I miss my partner and companion. I miss my babymama. I miss my wiff. I cry every day. I have a little ritual - my specific time for grieving you. When I put Torin to bed, I play him the last video you made. I can watch the video...

I need a name for this day that neither cutesy nor grim

Danielle Louise Joanette-Kluck passed from this life one year ago today. As has become a cathartic personal tradition on milestone dates, I've written her a letter, which I share with you below. Danielle, my love, It’s been one year since I held your hand and felt you squeeze mine for the last time. Though only the first of many, it’s still surreal to think about. I went back and read the blogs I wrote and the other letters I’ve written to you (some of which I’ve also published as blogs), and it very easily brought back feelings and memories of the past year. There are a number of moments that I remember like they were yesterday, and that I’ll likely never forget. It seems like a good time to take stock. How are Torin and I doing, one year out? There are a few different axes upon which we can measure, but I think I’m going to upgrade the overall answer from my frequent reply of “okay most days” to “pretty good on average” . I’ve hit a stride in my single-parenthood and feel more c...
